Title of Research Study: Studying the Effects of Environment and Alcohol on Mood (StEEAM)

Project Investigators: Scott E. King, M. A., & William R. Corbin, Ph.D.

Why am I being invited to participate in this research study? You are being invited to participate because you are a 21- to 25-year-old who drinks alcohol and who lives in the United States.

Why is this research being done? This is a brief survey to determine if you are eligible to participate in a larger study about reasons for alcohol use, drinking context, and mood in daily life. If you are eligible, you may be invited to respond to additional online surveys, attend a brief orientation session (conducted online via Zoom), and then engage in a 3-week (18 day) assessment period where you will respond to short surveys on your smartphone. In total, you can receive up to $145 for your participation in this larger study.

How long will the research last? We expect that individuals will spend approximately 5 minutes participating in this screening survey.

How many people will be studied? We expect that about 1000 people will participate in this screener.

What happens if I say yes, I want to be in this research? If you agree to participate in this study, you will respond to a brief survey about your demographics and alcohol use. The information you provide will be used to determine your eligibility for the larger study. If you are determined to be eligible based on the results of the screener survey, you will be asked to verify that you are a United States resident and between the ages of 21 – 25 by providing proof of valid government-issued ID (e.g., driver’s license, state-issued ID). You are free to decide whether you wish to participate in this study and you are free to discontinue the survey at any time. You are free to skip any questions you are not comfortable answering.

What happens if I say yes, but I change my mind later? Participation in this study is entirely voluntary and you may choose to leave the study at any time, for any reason, without penalty.

Is there any way participating in this study could be bad for me? There is limited risk associated with this study. There is a risk that you may feel uncomfortable or experience frustration, anxiety, inconvenience, or discomfort answering questions about your alcohol use (or other questions). If you feel uncomfortable answering any of the questions on the questionnaires, you may decline to answer those questions and/or discontinue your participation in the study. The only other risk is a loss of confidentiality which could have a negative impact given the sensitive nature of the information.

What happens to the information collected for research? All information about you obtained from this research will be kept as confidential as possible. Your data will not have any personal information attached to it. If you provide your consent to participate, you will enter a study generated ID and then be redirected to a separate survey to respond to the screener survey. From the point you are redirected, any data collected will be attached to your unique ID number, not your name nor any other identifying information about yourself. These data will be stored on a secure encrypted server, as will a Master file linking your ID and contact information. The Master file will also be password protected and accessible only to senior research staff on the project. This information is being collected for screening purposes only. Irrespective of eligibility, participant contact information will be retained to ensure individuals can only participate once. At the completion of the study, all contact information will be permanently deleted.
